Majors: Psychology

Computing also allows majors of Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Exercise Science, and Social Science to access their labs too. (maintained under same system administrators)

Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

After hours access: 24-hour access with MTU ID card for majors only

Help: 

Lab consultants will be on duty during posted hours in the early evening and selected weekend hours. Check the schedule on the door for times that classes reserve the main lab. Food and drink are not allowed.

To report problems with computers or other equipment in the lab, messages should be sent to psychmaint@mtu.edu
Any questions about computer use and operations should be directed to the same address
Printer paper is stored in the main Psychology main office in Room 310, ask the secretary or student assistant for assistance.

Computer type(s): Dell Pentium4 PCs

Software: MS Office 2003, Firefox, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, RDP Remote Access, Adobe Photoshop, SPSS 15

Hardware: color scanner, CD/DVD-burners, b/w laser printer called "psychprint1"

Printer: HP Laser 4300. The printer is called psychprint1, and is identified as the default printer. There are no limits on the number of pages you may print, but please use care in order to avoid wasting paper.

It is strongly advised that you continue to use your MTU e-mail account (username@mtu.edu) throughout your education at Michigan Tech. Important notices regarding billings, class schedules, and your major are communicated to students via these accounts.

Huskymail is available from any Web Browser. Point browser to huskymail.mtu.edu.  Thunderbird email client is available on all PC's - configuration instruction located http://email.mtu.edu/docs/public/settings.

You have a pre-assigned username, e-mail address, MTU ID # and ISO password that gives you access to computing services at MTU. These follow the standard naming conventions explained below. There may be exceptions—if you encounter problems, ask your lab consultant or system administrator for assistance.

Your username is…

  • “1st initial + 2nd initial + 1st six letters of last name”
  • Example: Edward George Greenleaf
  • Username = “eggreenl”
    (Yours is listed on the critical card as your “UserID”)

Your MTU ID # is…

  • Generally your "M number"
  • MTU ID # = "M12345678"

Your e-mail address is…

  • “username”@mtu.edu
  • Example: Edward George Greenleaf
  • E-mail address = “eggreenl@mtu.edu”

Your e-mail and machine log on password is…

For security reasons, you will need to change your password the first time you login and periodically in the future as well.

Logging-in to your computer

1–Press the “CTRL” + “ALT” + “DEL” keys simultaneously
2–Type your username at the “User name:” prompt
3–Type your password at the “Password:” prompt
4–Verify “BIO” is entered at the “Domain:” prompt
5–Click “OK”

Changing your computer password

You may change your password at any time.  Once logged in, hit Control-Alt-Delete, then choose “Change Password”:
1–Type your current password at the prompt
2–Type a new password at the prompt

It is strongly recommended that you create a password with numbers, letters using different cases, and symbols.

3–Re-type your new password at the prompt to confirm it
4–Click “OK”

Accessing the World Wide Web

1-From the Start choose Firefox at the top of the left column
2- You may also use Mozilla or Internet Explorer

Logging-off from your computer

1–click Start, then Logoff, to logoff the system.

Memory and Web Pages

All students are provided 1gigabyte of storage capacity.  All students also can develop their own web pages.  A separate document provides guidance on basic steps for building a web page;  also see departmental web page.
