You have a pre-assigned username, e-mail address, MTU ID # and ISO password that gives you access to computing services at MTU. These follow the standard naming conventions explained below. There may be exceptions—if you encounter problems, ask your lab consultant or system administrator for assistance.

  • “1st initial + 2nd initial + 1st six letters of last name”
  • Example: Edward George Greenleaf
  • Username = “eggreenl”
    (Yours is listed on the critical card as your “UserID”)

Your MTU ID # is…

  • Generally your "M number"
  • MTU ID # = "M12345678"

Your e-mail address is…

  • “username”@mtu.edu
  • Example: Edward George Greenleaf
  • E-mail address = “eggreenl@mtu.edu”

Unless you have already changed your password: For security reasons, it is strongly advised that you change your password the first time you login and periodically in the future as well.

Logging-in to your computer

Windows PC
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del. Select the SANDA (Sciences and Arts) domain. (The other domain is purely local.) Type in your username and password. A profile will be created for you if one does not already exist, so you may customize your desktop environment.

Linux PC
Type in name and password, and select the environment

Changing your computer password

Windows PC
When logged onto an NT workstation, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to display the Windows NT Security dialog box. Click Change Password. Enter the information for changing your password on the SANDA domain.

Linux PC
At a Unix prompt %, type: % yppasswd
It will prompt you for the old password, then the new one, and then the new one again. This will change your password on phylabserver.

Accessing the World Wide Web

Windows PC
Mozilla, Internet Explorer and Netscape are standard browsers. Shortcuts appear on the desktop or can be accessed under the Start/Programs icons

Linux PC
At a Unix prompt %, type % mozilla

Logging-off from your computer

Windows PC
Select Start / Shut Down... / Close all programs and log on as a different user.

Linux PC
Click on the red hat button in the lower left corner of the screen.
