1. How do I get to Michigan Technological University? [top]

Michigan Tech is located in Upper Michigan's beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. The campus is located off US-41 on the eastern side of the city of Houghton.

Follow this link to find directions to the Michigan Tech Campus.

This photograph was taken by an alumnus of Michigan Tech and a member of the business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi. The photograph is available as a postcard at the bookstore and several other businesses in the local area. The actual sign is in the basement of the AKPsi House.

2. How do I sign up for courses/classes? [top]

Ultimately, you sign up for courses through Student Records and Registration, located in the Administration Building. This can be done in person or through the internet using BanWeb (requires ISO password). Utilize the schedule planning center page to learn about when you can add and drop courses, how to register, about financial aid, co-curricular course, distribution courses, and much more.

When signing up for classes, whether in person or through BanWeb, you will need the 'CRN' (course number) for the course. This course number can be found under schedule of classes link on the schedule planning page.

More about your course can be found in the undergraduate catalog and the undergraduate course descriptions.

3. Do I have to declare a major? [top]

You do not have to declare a major to attend Michigan Tech. But in order to be eligible for financial aid, you are required to be a degree seeking student. In addition, some courses will require you to be enrolled into a particular degree program.

To become a degree seeking student, you will need to declare a major and work with an advisor and Degree Audit.

4. Do I have to attend first year orientation? [top]

No. As a nontraditional student, you do not have to attend the first year orientation, but you are required to attend orientation specifically for transfer and exchange students. As a transfer student, you have the option of completing an online orientation, and/or signing up for an on-campus orientation session for transfers. Visit our Transfer student orientation page for more information.

5. Do I have to attend orientation for transfer and exchange students? [top]

Yes. If you are new to Michigan Tech, you are required to attend orientation. As a transfer student, you have the option of completing an online orientation, and/or signing up for an on-campus "orientation session for transfers." Visit our Transfer student orientation page for more information.

6. I'm a transfer student, how will my credits be evaluated? [top]

You will need to send an official transcript to the Michigan Tech Transfer Services Office from the college or university you previously attended. Your credits will then be evaluated based on course content, number of credits per course, etc. and then matched with similar Michigan Tech courses. Credit will be awarded based on the similarity of courses. [taken from First Year Programs orientation FAQ]

7. What placement tests will I have to take? [top]

Several placement tests will be offered online and during Orientation to be sure that you get off to a great start. You will be contacted by mail or at your Michigan Tech email address concerning any online tests that you may be eligible to complete. All other placement tests will be offered during Orientation. Please note that if you would like to continue your modern language studies, you must pre-register to take the Modern Language Placement Test (French, German, or Spanish). Visit this page for more information. [taken from First Year Programs orientation FAQ]

8. What are my options for housing? [top]

If you live on-campus, your options include three dormitories (Douglas Houghton Hall, Wadsworth Hall, and McNair Hall) and MTU Apartments called Daniell Heights.

Living off campus includes other options. To learn more, see the housing page for more information.

9. How do I register my vehicle? [top]

If you live on campus, you must register your vehicle at the Housing Facilities Office located in DHH, room G044.

If you live off campus, register your vehicle at Student Records and Registration located in the Administration Building.

10. Where do I park my vehicle? [top]

Once you've registered your vehicle, the appropriate office, Housing Facilities Office or Student Records and Registration, will designate you a parking lot. Upper class people (most credits) will get lot 10 and upper 17 (less walking), where if you are a first year, living in the dorms, you get to park in lot 21. Off campus students park in either lot 9 (first come, first serve) or in lot 26 and 32, which are further up the hill. refer to map

You can always park at the metered parking. Note the tickets for the metered parking is $5, going to $10 after two weeks, and parking in the incorrect lot is $20. (information correct as of March 2007 - contact Public Safety for current rates)

...other wording about parking can be seen in Tech Guide and the Student Handbook...

11. How do I learn about financial aid? [top]

You can visit the Michigan Tech Financial Aid office in the Administration Building. No matter what, you will need to fill out a FAFSA to be eligible for most aid. If you are new to FAFSA, you have to first create a PIN from the Federal Student Aid office at the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Feel free to explore other funding through ED.

Go to the MTU Financial Aid website to download various forms for loans, etc. Scholarships are award by specific departments based on the stipulations of a particular scholarship. Inquire to your department about any specific scholarships you can apply for or what they offer. It never hurts to ask about additional resources.

12. Should I work while in college? [top]

This will be a personal question, but you should weigh in that school comes first. If you get a job on campus, most employers understand that school does come first. If you are working in the local area, you have to learn to balance your time to verify your success. If you feel that you can't work or don't want to work while you are in school, make sure that you get enough financial aid to support yourself. Otherwise explore employment.

You will have to separate two perspectives for employment: are you working for money or for experience.

We all need or want money. Getting your degree will guarantee that you will make more money in the future and have more control over your own life. Make it a priority to finish what you start here at Michigan Tech.

There are many opportunities for internships on campus and off campus that apply to your future career, as well as other experiences.

13. How do I find employment? [top]

Explore the site page on employment. Included is a list of resources for off-campus employment, and internal employment.

If you are interested in an internship or a full time job after graduation, utilize the Career Center and keep alert of upcoming job fairs.

14. What is there to do around here? [top]

You might hear that there is nothing to do around here. It will come down to your personal interests, but there are many things to do around here. Review the site page on getting involved, arts and entertainment, recreation, and on while you are here.

Students do come and go here. Fortunately, there are usually excellent student musicians that perform at various bars and restaurants. These are not always publicized enough, so you have to keep your eyes and ears open to catch what is going on here. A local music calendar has been created as one source and you can sign up on the list to get the email update.

15. Where should I go if I'm having problems with coursework? Are tutoring sessions available? [top]

The first place you should go to is your instructor before or after class or during office hours. Ask him or her for advice for your required assistance necessary. Your instructor will have the inside scoop for the help you need, i.e. specific tutors for the particular class. Secondly, visit the respective learning center for your subject area. Another resource is your academic advisor. If you need further assistance, Student Affairs and COMPASS (Center for Orientation, Mentoring, Parents, and Academic Student Success) - formally First Year Programs - set up learning communities to further help you with your success.

16. What learning centers does MTU have? [top]

Refer to the student handbook for a list of learning centers and their respective websites.

17. How do I access my computer lab? [top]

Refer to the computer lab pages to learn more. Your ISO (initial sign on password) is your access to many sites on campus. Initially it is generated by Student Records and Registration located in the Administration Building. After your first successful log in, you should change it.

18. When should I visit the Career Center? [top]

You can visit the Career Center whenever you want. They recommend visiting them within your first year. This is beneficial because you can learn of their services early on. Taking advantage of their services could help you determine the amount of internships to take advantage.

The Career Center will help with writing a resume and cover letter. They also help with the interview process with mock interviews. You may want to check out the future of your career path in terms of starting salaries, amount of positions available now, which companies are hiring from your field of study, etc.

19. What is an Internship/Co-op? What are the advantages? [top]

Refer to the Career Center's explanation. If you have additional questions, they would be your best resource. Your advisor might have some ideas to explore as well.
