The SDC houses an ice arena, multipurpose room, swimming pool, gymnasium, climbing wall, fitness center, racquetball/squash courts, dance room, indoor rifle range, and a music room – and it is all free to use by MTU students! Outdoor soccer fields, tennis courts, a football/track field and softball fields are also available. Check out the Facilities link at the website for more information. The SDC has some sports equipment available to use or rent for a nominal fee.

Gates Tennis Center provides four, well-lit, indoor courts for your tennis enjoyment. The center is located just behind the SDC. It is best to make reservations, so call 487-2073 if you’re interested. You can bring your own equipment, or purchase some at University Images in the SDC on the way!

The MacInnes Ice Arena is home to the Division I MTU Huskies hockey team. The arena is also available for PE classes, IM ice hockey and recreational skating and has been used for Commencement and concerts as well. Check the SDC for available ice times.

MTU’s newly developed Recreational Forest and Nordic Ski Trails are 600 acres of beautiful forest, located behind the SDC on Sharon Avenue. The trails are used throughout the year for biking, cross-country skiing, hiking, running, and snowshoeing. They have over 20km of wide, marked loops and about 15km of single-track biking/running trails. Bridges, dirt jumps, and ramps are available for adventurous mountain bikers.

Mont Ripley is a popular place for both skiers and snowboarders in the winter. With an annual snowfall of about 250 inches, it’s to be expected. Ripley has 19 runs of varying difficulty and six days a week of night skiing. Skis, snowboards and all the equipment are available to rent or purchase in their ski shop. Students receive a discount on lift tickets.

Portage Lake Golf Course

Portage Lake Golf Course is located about 2 miles south of campus on US-41. This 18-hole course is one of the oldest in Michigan. Call 487-2641 to set up a tee-time. MTU Students receive a discount. A driving range and golf lessons are available, as well as men’s and women’s leagues during the season.

The MUB has fun activities for individuals and groups. A video arcade is located in the MUB Commons with thirteen different video game machines. The basement houses six lanes of indoor bowling. For $2.25 you get one game, a ball, shoes, popcorn, and fountain pop. What a deal! Four billiards tables are also available in the basement and you can play as many games as you want for $4.00/hr. Bowling and billiards are also available for parties at a special rate.
