MTU has over 100 student organizations that satisfy a variety of interests. The groups are organized into the following catagories: Academic/Professional, Ethnic/Cultural, Fraturnity, Sorority, Government, Honor Society, Media, Religious, Service, Special Interest, and Sports. The Student Organizations website provides links to many of the organizations’ webpages. If you don’t see a group that fits your needs, make sure to use the Search feature. There may be additional organizations that are not listed. Student organizations give you an opportunity to meet new people, learn more about the world and make your college experience more enjoyable. Check out this site for more information about organizations that interest you.

Fine Arts Organizations
www.fa.mtu.edu

This department is host to a number of opportunities related to fine arts. At the bottom of the page, you’ll find links to “Art”, “Music”, and “Theatre”. Through the Art link you can learn about art exhibits, the Art Studio housed in the Walker building, and upcoming events. The Music link gives you access to the Michigan Tech Pep Band, Concert Band, Wind Symphony, the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, and all four Jazz Bands, plus information about music minors. The Theatre link provides information about all of the theatre opportunities that MTU has to offer. This information is extremely important for anyone interested in acting, costuming, set design, lighting, stage crew or house management. Here you can also learn about the MTU Dance Company, the Troupe and the Student Theatre Association.

Each student at MTU is required to fulfill 6 “co-curricular” (physical education) classes prior to graduation. There are almost 50 different activities to chose from and most classes offer beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. PE classes include common sports such as soccer and hockey as well as archery, fishing, billiards and Tae Kwon Do. The “Department Links” along the side of the webpage provide information about what classes are available and course descriptions. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to do something, a PE class may be your chance. Check them out!

Intramural-Recreational Sports
www.exsci.mtu.edu/im
Student Development Complex, Michigan Tech Campus
487-2715

MTU hosts a variety of IM sports throughout the year ranging from rifle tournaments to softball to waterpolo. Each sport has its own season and is divided into Female, Male and Co-Ed leagues. This is a great opportunity to get away from your books, hang out with friends and enjoy some physical activity. At the end of each season, the leagues have Finals and an IM Champion team crowned. First place teams receive t-shirts, and second place teams receive IM cups (which in some cases are more sacred than the t-shirts). Special awards are given at the end of the year for female and male IM Athletes of the Year. If you’re interested in adding a little more fun to your semester, check out the website and look for announcements of upcoming sports in the SDC, on table tents and on residence hall bulletin boards.

Varsity Athletics
www.athletics.mtu.edu

Did you enjoy playing sports in high school? Have you ever considered playing at the college level? You should try out! Men can choose from basketball, cross-country, football, hockey, Nordic skiing, tennis or track & field. Women have the option of basketball, cross-country, Nordic skiing, tennis or track & field or volleyball. The website provides regular updates about each team and has contact info for head coaches. Varsity athletics provide competition beyond that of IM or club sports. In addition, the varsity athletes are in charge of MTU Homecoming during the Fall semester. If you’re interested, check out the website and contact a coach for more information.
