During the winter, a fleet of 4 groomers (3 New Holland and 1 Tucker) groom nearly 35,300 miles of snowmobile trails in Michigan's beautiful, and snowy, Keweenaw Peninsula. Work continues over the summer and fall in order to open the trails on December 1.
You will find over 200 miles of well-developed snowmobile trails in the Keweenaw Peninsula, connected with 2,500 miles of snowmobile trails traversing Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Keweenaw Trail System is 12 trails/loops (or 30 segments) that take the rider from the Bill Nicholls trail (#3) across the Portage Lift Bridge (use the bottom portion, not the canal) north to Copper Harbor. Side trails to Freda, Lake Linden, Gay, Eagle River & Eagle Harbor, Lac La Belle, Keweenaw Point or Brockway Mountain run through some of the most scenic areas of the Upper Peninsula. All trails are 8 to 12 feet wide, groomed daily with state-of-the-art equipment and clearly identified.
The Portage Lift Bridge is a double-decker bridge that allows the road traffic to travel on the top level, while the snowmobilers pass back and forth on the lower level. The bridge was constructed in 1959 and at that time, the lower level was used for rail traffic. With the abandonment of rail service, the lower level is now open in the winter exclusively to snowmobiles. Please use the Lift Bridge and not the waterway.
