The Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter is committed to ending all forms of violence in personal relationships and within the community. The Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter recognizes that violence in the home is a significant crime impacting the whole community's health and well being. Volunteers are needed to answer the crisis and business phone, be an empathetic listener and support person to victims, provide child care during support meetings, and perform light cleaning duties.

The purpose of the Keweenaw Family Resource Center (KFRC) is to support, strengthen and enrich family life in the Keweenaw Peninsula by providing programs for families with children, ages 0-4 years. There are many volunteer opportunities with KFRC including reading stories and doing crafts with children as well as assisting in child care during parent informational meetings. Superior Child Abuse Prevention Council (SCAP) is one of the local, non-profit organizations affiliated with KFRC. The council seeks to raise awareness around issues of child abuse and neglect. This organization also provides the community with prevention programs and educational opportunities. Volunteers with SCAP serve at fundraising events and at information booths.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters provide individual attention, guidance, and opportunities to help children develop into secure, productive adults. Volunteers are placed with a child who has similar interests. Examples of activities for "bigs and littles" are: playing catch, planting and caring for a garden, hiking, bowling, snowshoeing, learning bike/automobile maintenance, and going to the park.

The Bluffs is an assisted living senior community based on a 50% social and 50% medical model. This means that an equal emphasis is placed on social interaction and medical care. Volunteers are always needed for one-on-one visits. Activities with residents include: card games, scrabble, reading, letter writing, walks, puzzles, knitting, exercise, and arts.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization which works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged. Volunteers do not necessarily need building skills. There are opportunities such as volunteering at the work site, getting your church involved, helping in the office with various projects and mailings, or serving on one of the Habitat Committees.

Dial HELP is a 24-hour crisis line. This program offers a rape victim support team, support for victims of all crime, substance abuse prevention, a 24-hour senior help line, community education and training, community and school presentation programs, a resource library and seven county WATTS service. There are opportunities to assist with activities, conduct advocacy, provide support on the crisis line, or perform basic maintenance and office functions.

Volunteers are a very important part of the Humane Society. Over 800 dogs and cats are helped by the shelter each year. One of the most popular volunteer activities is dog walking! They also need volunteers that are willing to groom the animals, clean their cages, and transport them to the vet as needed. The Humane Society also needs help with fundraising activities and appreciates donations of pet food, blankets, cleaning supplies and pet supplies.

Tutoring, reading to small groups, assisting with science labs, and mentoring are only a few of the activities for which volunteers are needed.

Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly

The purpose of Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly is to extend friendship to those 60 and older who are without regular support from family or friends. Volunteers engage in friendly visits with isolated elderly citizens, assist with the preparation and serving of holiday dinners, pack Christmas gift boxes, transport people to medical appointments, and cut, split and stack wood for those depending on wood stoves for heat.

Local Red Cross chapter provides humanitarian services throughout the community. Volunteers are greatly appreciated. They can work in the main office answering phones, replying to emails, making copies and cleaning, or they can help at some of the many events held by Red Cross. Ambitious volunteers can take a half-hour training course to become part of the local Disaster Team. This team is sent throughout the area to assist in the case of natural disasters (floods, fires, etc).
